Doing Disneyland on the Slow

Today marked the last day on my trip out to D23- the Disney version of Comicon they host every 2 years.  This was my first time attending and it was a rewarding but intense experience. You can find out what happened each day on my youtube channel here. I also wrote 8 articles over at rotoscopers.com on the panels I was able to attend.

With the expo come and gone I had planned an extra day at Disneyland to finish off the trip. It seemed like the natural thing to do but when it came to the day I had second thoughts. I had a massive blister on my left heel that I had covered with 2 band aids and it hurt to. I always have feet pain and Disneyland with all the standing in line and walking might be too much to bear.

Well, I decided to give it a shot and just take things very slow and relaxed! And it ended up being a pretty great day!

I know  a lot of other people have physical limitations or problems and I thought they might benefit from a few of my suggestions for doing Disneyland on the Slow!

  1. Arrive as early as possible. This saved me my butt. I got there close to 8 am, and I went on ride after ride with only 20 minute lines. Plus it is cooler then so not as exhausting!
  2. Have a different attitude about the day. Try to stop and enjoy the environment. You will need to take time to rest and Disneyland has beautiful flowers and foliage that you can enjoy
  3. Use fast passes strategically. I used 2- Indiana Jones and Star Tours because those would have been very long lines.
  4. Have actual meals not junk food. One of the great things about Disneyland is the food is pretty tasty. Sure it is overpriced but at least it tastes good. They have the carnival type food like churros and turkey legs which are good, but I think it makes a more pleasant day to actually get a meal with some nutrients. There are a lot of spots but The Plaza is my favorite. Eat your food and relax. Enjoy yourself!

5. Realize you may not be able to do every ride. I did 9 rides over the course of the day and I’m happy with that. It might have been nice to catch the Winnie the Pooh ride but it just wasn’t in the cards today. I went on Alice, Mr Toad’s Wild Ride, Peter Pan, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Indiana Jones, Small World, Tiki Room and Star Tours.

6. Know when to call it a day. By 4 pm my feet were in a lot of pain and I wasn’t enjoying myself any more. I could have kept pushing forward but why? The point of a vacation is to have fun and be happy and pushing through ride after ride in pain certainly doesn’t accomplish that. I took the monorail and then called an uber and went home and I’m glad I did!

7. This is more of a solo traveler tip but I listened to an audiobook about Walt Disney’s life while waiting in line and that was very enlightening and a nice way to not get bored from a lack of conversation.

8. It probably goes without saying wear good shoes with support and stay fully hydrated.

9. Do stretches for your feet before and after each ride. Just a little heel stretch goes a long way!

10. Don’t feel obligated to go on any particular ride. I’m not huge into Splash Mountain but I found myself feeling like I had to do it to have the ‘Disneyland experience’ but I realized that was stupid. Taking Disneyland on the slow is about making it fun for you and enjoying yourself.

So that is my tips for enjoying Disneyland on the Slow. Relax and have fun in the happiest place on earth!
