Hey guys! Happy Sunday! I just wanted to share with you all a review I just posted for my Family Movie Night Series. In this case it is not technically a movie that I am talking about. Today I look at a television show from my youth called Faerie Tale Theater. It ran during the 80s and has a bunch of famous people all reenacting different famous fairy tales like Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Mermaid and more. The production behind these mini-films are hokey and cheap by today’s standards but there is a lot of enthusiasm and loved put in that make a difference. I love how true to the original stories they are with darker themes and endings explored. I also love that the actors seem to be having the time of their lives.
It seems like a lot of my friends in Utah watched the show, so I’m not sure if it aired more here than other places but it was a lot of fun. It kind of feels like Once Upon a Time does now. That has a continuing story-line but it celebrates fairy tales in kind of a hokey way. Some people will be distracted by the cheesy production design but if you can get behind that then there really is something there to enjoy.
What made me think about it is there seems to be this insatiable appetite for these live action Disney remakes with Beauty and the Beast being the latest. I have been mixed on these remakes but many others have loved all of them. I think just like I liked seeing the live action fairy tales told in Faerie Tale Theater, kids today like seeing these live action movies. They fill that faerie tale loving niche!
So did you watch Faerie Tale Theater? What did you think of it? You can purchase the dvds on amazon or watch many on youtube. Let me know what you think!
Hey guys! I just wanted to quickly share something with you. Last week I finished my 56 week project of reviewing the Disney Canon on my youtube channel. I’m really proud of each of these videos and it was interesting to see how some opinions changed on rewatch:
Give the videos a watch and I would love to have your feedback. Thanks!

Hey guys! I hope you are all having a wonderful start to your December. I thought for today’s post I would give a little shout-out to the man behind the mouse Walt Disney. Dec 5th would have been his 115th birthday and I think we could all benefit from being a little bit more like Walt.
The thing that I admire most about Walt Disney is what a bold risk taker he was. Going all the way back to the laugh-a-gram days he pushed the boundaries in every avenue of life. He made Steamboat Willie which revolutionized movies and gave birth to the branding animated icon in Mickey Mouse. He then mortgaged his house to make Snow White- a film that was dismissed by many for years. Some people even believing full-length animation would be bad for the eyes. It of course was a mammoth hit and changed everything.
He then was bold in future films both live action and animated, never green-lighting an animated sequel despite much pressure to do so. He said “we keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” I often think of this when I hear about the next live action remake Disney is doing. Walt would not like this trend a bit…
Anyway, he then was bold in founding Disneyland- an expensive gamble that took nearly 2 decades from conception to complete. People called it ‘Walt’s folly’ and many saw it failing within a year. Now we accept the parks as a obvious choice but it was far from it at the time.
There are some who claim Walt was a mean man but I sat in a lecture with Disney animator Floyd Norman at comicon and he said he never saw Walt get on a person where it wasn’t deserved. He also said Walt was actually quite progressive in hiring women like Mary Blair and people of color like himself.
I’ve also heard claims he was anti-Semitic but these claims are weak at best. They are so weak that when PBS did a documentary on Walt they looked into the claims and said:
“It’s not based on any truth,” panelist Sarah Colt, the docu’s producer and director, said of the long-rumored charge of anti-Semitism, “so we saw no reason to bring it up in the film.” Colt said she looked for evidence of Disney’s bigotry, but to no avail, unlike the subject of her previous PBS film Henry Ford, “who was a virulent anti Semite.” In the case of Disney, she said, “it wasn’t relevant to who he was, so it’s not part of the film.”
PBS is a pretty liberal organization and like the director said they published the vitriol of Henry Ford so I’m confident if it had been there they would have put it in the documentary about Walt. Walt’s biographer Neal Gabler found ‘no evidence of anti-Semitism” and Richard Sherman, frequent Disney composer said the allegations were “preposterous”.
Anyway, none of us were there so I suppose we will never know for sure. Today I am grateful for all he gave us. My life would certainly be very different if he hadn’t taken those risks and I hope I can follow his example from time to time. I hope I can be bolder, try new things, take more risks.
Happy Birthday Walt!
Sorry again for a week in between posts. It was one of those weeks that just flew by. I’ve been busy and happy and more than a little bit tired (the Olympics threw off my sleep schedule badly). Anyway, I’ve been having a lot of fun working on my youtube channel and movie blog. I am almost at 1,000 subscribers so if you aren’t subscribed help me out! 🙂 I have particularly enjoyed doing podcasts with friends. My friend Tom and I are almost finished reviewing all the Star Trek movies (that’s 13). The last one will be this week.
I also posted my Disney Canon video of Hunchback of Notre Dame and my friend Christine felt really differently. We did a podcast and talked about our differences. I’m really proud of it and how it came out. It shows to the internet you can disagree without being disagreeable.
On non-youtube front there has been lots of stuff going on. The biggest news is my parents have officially moved to Utah. There was definitely a time when this would have annoyed me, having my parents so close. But now I’m actually really excited about it. It’s nice to have them close by so I can drop by and visit and have support when I need it. I’ve also enjoyed being close to Sam and Madeline my siblings who will now be living close to me. I went to movie screenings with both of them last week (went with Madeline to Kubo and the Two Strings– fabulous. And Sam to Morgan– not good). I’m really excited for the years to come and having all of that family support!
Other fun development is I’ve started entertaining a little bit more. I had people from my new singles ward who all live by me come over to watch the Closing Ceremonies of the Olympics. I got Trader Joes appetizers from all over the world! I was having so much fun I didn’t even take a picture. 🙂
I also went to my blogger book club last week where we read the graphic novel One Dead Spy which was very charming history book for kids. Then yesterday I had 4 of my friends over for my smaller book club where we talked about The Martian. The ladies all seemed to like it even if it did have a little more bad language than they are used too. It was so much fun because I had freeze dried ice cream and tang for the treats! Perfect for your astronauts!
So that’s what has been going on. I’m very busy at work creating a game day campaign and my channel and blogging takes up most of my free time but I love doing what I’m doing.
What do you guys have going on in your life? Anything exciting? Let me know. 🙂
Also if you have any ideas for a regular series I could do on this blog let me know. I was doing the Teaser Tuesday book reviews but they didn’t seem to get much attention, so I stopped. I could review books or music. Something simple I could do each week.
Hey guys! I hope you are having a Happy Spring! Things are going well for me. I’ve been keeping myself busy with blogging, movies, writing and work. Next week I’m eagerly anticipating watching Jungle Book! Make sure you are subscribed to my channel and blog to find out my thoughts on it.
Today is Friday and that means it’s the next entry in the Friday 5 series. This is a music series where we get a topic each week and have to pick 5 songs that fit said topic. This week the topic is ‘Songs that Remind You of Spring’. It’s not a time of the year that is very musical compared to Winter or Summer but I like all 5 of my picks. They are each songs I feel are joyful and bright which is what I think of with Spring.
My 5 songs are:
Best Day of My Life-American Authors- I thought of this song because graduations and other big events happen in the Spring. It seemed like a good fit to sing about the best day of my life!
Great Day to Be Alive- Travis Tritt- I hadn’t done a country song in a while and this one is the definition of chill.
Colors of the Wind- Pocahontas. If you’ve read my Disney blog you know I’m not the biggest Pocahontas fan but I do like the music (except Mine, Mine, Mine which is one of the worst Disney songs). Judy Kuhn as Pocahontas’ voice is one of the best in all of Disney. My Pocahontas Review.
Daydream Believer- The Monkees- Cheer up and sing a song with The Monkees! This is such a fun song.
Pocketful of Sunshine- Natasha Bedingfield- It’s a song about a pocketful of sunshine. What’s more spring than that?
So those are my picks. What would be your picks?
This week on the Friday 5 we have a fun topic- it’s cover songs!
I picked 2 Disney songs from an album called We Love Disney I think you will really like. I could have done all 5 from the album.
Then I have a favorite song from Ingrid Michelson singing Elvis Can’t Help Falling in Love with You
Next one of my all time favorite songs by Hawaiian singer IZ his cover of Over the Rainbow
Finally we have from the failed movie Across the Universe a great cover of a Beatles song Blackbird
I hope you enjoy these songs and I would be so grateful if you watched my video on youtube and gave it a thumbs up if you feel so inclined. And if you aren’t subscribed I have been doing daily videos so I think you will find it worth your while!
Next week is 5 Favorite Lullabies so that should be fun!
Hi guys!
I hope you are doing great! I just wanted to do a quick post.
First, I needed to make sure to tell my readers on this blog about Disney’s new film- Zootopia. What a special treat we have at the theaters! As someone who has seen the film twice and every other Disney film I can confidently say this is a MUST SEE in the theater!
Here is my review:
Here is my blog review on my movie blog if you prefer written reviews. http://54disneyreviews.com/2016/03/04/movie-55-zootopia/
Zootopia is a movie that has something for everyone. The world building is amazing with likable characters- particularly Judy Hopps who dreams of being Zootopia’s first rabbit cop. It’s also very funny, sweet and inventive. Disney is even willing to make fun of itself and the animation is stunning as usual.
Everyone I know who has seen it has loved it. This is also one of the rare films I preferred seeing in 3D because the experience was so immersive in Zootopia. It’s not 3D where things are thrown at you all the time, so if you can I’d go for it.
On another note my headache problems are persisting. This morning it was hard to even move it was so painful. I was wondering if any of you have tips that help you with headaches?I would love to hear anything that works for you.
It was weird because I had about 3 more hours I could have slept but I woke up with the piercing pain. It was that bad it woke me up. It made me feel nauseated and like I was going to pass out.
Today I ended up taking 2 excederine which I hate to do because of the caffeine and I used an ice pack to help. I also used lavender oil and that seemed to help a little bit.
My brother came down and it was nice to talk with him- distracted me from the pain.
Anyway, anything you can do to help me that would be great. Thank you! Hope you are doing well and will be in touch this week. I’ll at least have a Teaser Tuesday with my latest reading and a Friday Five music post on Friday. If you have any ideas for posts please let me know.
Thanks again!
